Watchlytes Primary celebrates Ofsted report

Watchlytes Primary School has been praised by Ofsted for its ambition and relentless focus on ensuring every child thrives.

The Welwyn Garden City school got green lights across the board in its latest inspection, achieving a strong standard for its Early Years and expected standard in the other six areas. Under the new Ofsted framework, “expected” is a high standard and means that the school is doing everything it should be doing, and “strong” marks out excellent, consistent work that’s making a real difference for children.

Watchlytes was placed in special measures in 2021 and joined Ivy Learning Trust the following year. Since then, academic outcomes have improved significantly, and are now well above the national average in all areas.

In the report, inspectors said: “Pupils attend a school where their needs are first and foremost in the work of all staff. Leaders have implemented a coherent and ambitious curriculum that is making a real positive difference in how well pupils learn.

“Since the school joined the trust, and new leaders came on board, they have brought about significant improvements in the school over time. Their skilled and determined work has resulted in an improved quality of provision. Staff are enormously dedicated to the school and pupils. They have been, and remain, fully on board with the journey of improvement.”

The school was commended for its strong early years provision, with inspectors praising the “highly ambitious curriculum which is expertly taught by staff.”

The report said: “Children in the early years get off to a flying start as they begin their journey through school. The care and education they receive is of very high quality. Leaders’ ambition and relentless focus on ensuring every child, particularly the most disadvantaged, learns and develops extremely well, is borne out in practice.

“Pupils recognise the high expectations that leaders and staff set, and they live up to these. This is true whether in the classroom, dinner hall or playground. They enjoy learning and showing their newfound knowledge as they move through the school.”

In 2025, 76% of pupils achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined in the Key Stage 2 SATs. This is 14% higher than the national average and a 34% improvement for the school since 2022.

Sophie Wenlock, Head of School at Watchlytes, said: “Watchlytes Primary School has been on an incredible journey and we are delighted that this has been recognised by Ofsted. Our dedicated staff team and ambitious curriculum means that we are now in the top 25% of schools nationally for Key Stage 2 results. Our outdoor play scheme has given children opportunities to grow in confidence and develop important life skills, including resilience and independence. And our calm, caring environment provides a safe and inspiring place for children to learn and grow.

“This transformation is down to our whole school community, including our staff, governors and families, who are passionate about giving children the best possible education and have worked together to build a school to be proud of.”

Matthew Kleiner-Mann, CEO of Ivy Learning Trust, said: “The moment you walk into Watchlytes Primary School you can see what a happy, ambitious and inclusive school it has become and this is testament to the whole school community, which has worked tirelessly to ensure that every child receives the education they deserve. We are thrilled with the school’s latest Ofsted report and we are looking forward to seeing Watchlytes continue to thrive over the coming years.”
