Outdoor learning a ‘breath of fresh air’

Children at Brimsdown Primary School abandoned their desks and took to the great outdoors instead for an Outdoor Learning Day.

Pupils of all ages had fun completing practical maths activities, including measuring objects, sorting hoops and counting things they discovered outside.

Dani Lang, Headteacher at Brimsdown, explains: “The benefits of outdoor learning are huge, particularly since children have been inside much more than usual over the last year because of the Covid pandemic. Many children live in flats, and some have been shielding, which means that they have little or no access to any outside space.

“To coincide with the NSPCC’s national Number Day, we decided to combine this with an outdoor learning day inspired by maths. The children had a wonderful time in the sun and wind, and some even wore maths-inspired costumes, which looked fantastic.”

In addition to special themed days like this, Brimsdown also runs a regular Forest School for the children.
