Gladiator inspires children to chase their dreams

Children from The Wroxham School had a special visit from a Gladiators star who told them about how he overcame his own challenges to become the UK’s fittest man.
Zack George, known as Steel in the BBC show, revealed that he has more than ten allergies, many of them severe, as well as asthma. As a child, he didn’t like exercising or eating healthily, but he was inspired after watching the original Gladiators series.
He told pupils: “I watched it every week and dreamed of becoming a Gladiator, so I started exercising, eating well, drinking more water, and improving my confidence. No matter what hurdles you face, you can achieve anything if you believe in yourself.”
Zack, who also revealed that he eats six eggs, two bagels and a bowl of porridge for breakfast, spoke to the primary school children about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, self-confidence and not judging yourself on other people.
His visit was organised by the school’s PTA, The Wroxham School Friends Association, to give the children a unique opportunity to meet one of their heroes and understand the importance of being strong, determined and confident. He spent a morning at the school, hosting an assembly, visiting classrooms and answering questions. He also told the children that his favourite original Gladiator is Saracen and his favourite games to take part in on the show are The Ring and Powerball.
Zack, who earned the title of the UK’s fittest man in 2020 when he won the UK CrossFit Open, joined the Gladiators lineup when the new series began in 2024.
Nicky Easey, Headteacher at The Wroxham, says: “The children absolutely loved meeting Steel and hearing all about his incredible journey. It was inspiring for them to learn that he has faced his own obstacles but hasn’t let them stand in his way.
“Steel showed the children that anything is possible if you have a strong mindset, believe in yourself and don’t give up. His message really resonated with them, and I think it’s something that will stay with them as they pursue their own dreams.”
